Chicago’s Nourishing Hope (formerly known as Lakeview Pantry) is designed to provide dignity to those in need. The food pantry found its first permanent home through the creative reuse of a building that was over 75 years old. The team used humble materials in imaginative ways to make the previously dark space feel open to all. Large, storefront windows allow passersby to easily see inside, raising awareness and removing stigma around issues of hunger and poverty. Colorful graphics and signage are eye-catching, and they also help visitors with low literacy navigate the facility. At checkout, a striking flower wall invites clients to choose a free, fresh bouquet to bring home⏤a small gesture to nourish the soul in addition to the body. The raised level of care embodied throughout the space makes the experience of asking for help easier and is more important than any one architectural moment. Today, the pantry serves over 8,000 people per year and has experienced a renewed interest in its mission.
"It was great working with Danny on this project. He really wanted to understand our business and mission and pull that into the design. He got that it’s not just about food for us; it’s about serving the whole person. I had no idea so much could be done in such a small space just through design. It’s been instrumental in helping us serve and empower our community."
