Creating this sleek, subterranean wine cellar using just four materials (glass, stone, wood, and steel) required a particular mastery of craft and engineering. The site’s slope side location demanded that the space—which was to be added to a 10,000-square-foot residence—be dug out from well below the lowest footings of the existing structure. The resulting 2,500-square-foot suite has climate-controlled storage for 7,500 bottles, plus an elegant tasting room. Natural materials are cleverly used as sculptural elements to give the space an ultra-modern feel, an exhilarating break from the region’s expected style.
Following the success of the wine cellar, the owners wanted to extend the same level of sophistication to the rest of the house. With a discerning eye, the design team pared back existing programming and removed a few key walls to create better connections between rooms and encourage more natural movement around the house.
