The request to add more space to Sublette County’s library came with a few constraints: limited room for growth, a budget-conscious client, and the existing structure’s traditional log-cabin style. In a single solution, the team designed an elegant, modern addition that encourages conversation between the old, the new, and nature. This concept is most strikingly felt in the outdoor courtyard formed by the new layout, where visitors can read and relax outdoors. The addition is also the first public building in the country to use insulated rammed-earth walls, which, in addition to tying the structure to the nature, maximize energy efficiency in an extreme high-altitude climate and better protect it from seismic activity.

"The finished project will be contemporary, but will marry quite well with the original log structure."

Matt Thackray, AIA
