Hailing from San Francisco, the owners of this residence sought to create a base camp for themselves and their children from which to enjoy the innumerable outdoor activities of the Jackson Hole landscape they now call home. Anchored by a modern house that reflects their interests in art, travel, and hosting large gatherings, the design reflects the high degree of involvement of these astute clients. From the man-made pond in which to practice kayak Eskimo rolls, to the gear barn that houses bicycles, boats, climbing, and fishing gear, this compound was built to support the idea of a family that embraces life’s abundance, together.

A small guest house completes the property and allows for extended family and friends to join the fun. A fully integrated landscape design ties the property together and screens views of an adjacent road. The sense of privacy is also upped by sound masking from a subtle water feature at the edge of the outdoor living room, where an outdoor pizza oven, radiant heaters, and fireplace also extend the use of the space. Up above, the team used cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels for the roof structure, a technical innovation that provides large sheltering overhangs during deep Teton winters.

"The owners have a minimalist aesthetic and wanted a house that’s informal, connects with the outdoors and is in tune with the surrounding landscape."
