This studio began as a request for a “jewel box,” a stand-alone sanctuary where the owners of the property’s larger log home could go to read, work, and relax. The challenge was to build something markedly contemporary next to such a traditional structure. The design team’s response was using two rammed earth walls, which ground the space in place while still allowing for a glass-wall gallery feel, important for two avid art collectors. The walls also frame views of the Sleeping Indian and Wolf Mountain as they reach for the main house, creating an open-air embrace between old and new.
"It's very appealing-we're using this ancient technology rejiggered for modern life."
